The Split Personality of Consciousness
Recently I experienced an episode of self-consciousness that led me to realize that the word "self-consciousness", paradoxically, contains two opposite and contradictory meanings.
On the one hand, it means being self-aware and expanded, aware of yourself and the world from your own perspective. On the other hand, it means being embarrassed, bashful and contracted, aware of yourself and the world from the world's perspective.
Thus, even the common language implies that the nature of consciousness is contradictory and bipolar, simultaneously inward and outward looking.
