Title: open source community

I wish to be a cooperative contributor to the open source movement / community.
Contributing, at least to integration material, if not specific function material.

Open source is general name given to intellectual property with a public license.
http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php

A few years ago, I was excited about the cooperative opportunities in franchising.
Open source material is better suited to sharing and cooperation than franchising.

"... the economic benefit of open source is distributed, not concentrated"
Linas Vepstas, February-July 2001.
http://linas.org/theory/freetrade.html

That is where I see myself heading within a broader community / society as well.
I would like to assist people to organize their effort and talent to cooperate.

To join ethical, environmental, cooperative, healthy and spiritual practices.
To bring the open source concept into business, organization and community.

Regarding my current small business...
Internet cafe st.kilda which is already a few years running...

The idea behind this small single and slowly developing operational system
is to offer a prototype cooperative communication & coordination hub.
web site:

http://hubway.com.au

I see an opportunity for each local and each network of physical hubs
to cooperate within a web site network the likes of

http://craigslist.org

Hubway plans to...

1. upgrade the web site with more open source functionality for users.
2. upgrade most of the computers with a linux desktop with openoffice.org
3. regarding point of sale, all operational software and procedures....

I would like to offer the business system under an open source license.

The business system will belong to the public while protecting authorship rights.
People all over the world could contribute to Hubways improvement and popularity.

People investing their personal effort, ideas or money into a hub or wider network
supplying operational contributions will be advertising their right of authorship.

Authorship is likely to lead to further employment and respect in a related field.

Specifically in

1. operations
2. hub setup
3. development
4. support

Hubway, an expanding ongoing co-evolution of diverse but localized hubs and networks.
Everyone will benefit without the exploitive or expensive property royalty patents.

The Hubway system would also encourage a cooperative ownership of physical property.
Hubway encourages employees, customers and suppliers to have a share and say in a hub.

The involvement of employees, customers and suppliers will reflect in hub policy values.
Cooperative ownership of physical hubs and networks will encourage a wider commitment.

The Hubway system aims to offer a popular communication platform for the wider public.

Greater public access will further empower the choice of the proverbial consumer voter.
Greater public access is the instrument creating real public opinion at home and beyond.

This may lead to...

1. a public access struggle between governments, corporations and cooperatives.
2. a property rights vs freedom debate over patent law and freedom of information.
3. a reform in the definition of ownership and authorship under all circumstances.

What Open Source community means to me...

Better practice and organization in cooperation and responsibility,
at a basic human level of choice, governance, access and authorship.

Open (local/community) currency

As important as the freedom of personal thought and expression
is organizational thought and its various forms of agreed expression.

Following from belief in the freedom of organization is
the freedom to develop and access an open (local/community) currency.

Open (local/community) currency represents the practical cooperation of parties
in a coherent but dynamic complex of agreements signified by a tradeable value.

Consider historical movements as social investments refining these freedoms.

In the article, Clean Slate, by Boudewijn Wegerif, May 2001 :

"The implication is that there was a call on Judaism to establish
a tradition of clean slate debt cancellations and land restitution,
and on the followers of Jesus to see his remonstration
against the moneychangers and merchants in this light."

hi Nat

we have not met before...
(i live in Melbourne, Australia).

i am writing to ask you if you are interested
in helping to develop an open source business model?

starting specifically with a local internet cafe cooperative model?

if only they could be owned and managed locally & cooperatively
and would be available eventually everywhere connecting people.

I imagine customer prepaid credits for purchases & services
and the upcoming employee wages as options for COOP shares.

I would like to see a local to wide area community CURRENCY
used to encourage local trading and communication.

CURRENCY to be evaluated against shares of the local cooperative.
utilizing a form of local area democracy and standards polling:

1. any local area purchases or services
2. Companies, councils and organizations
3. the internal governance of the COOP HUB

here is some background on my thinking...

http://humanifesto.org/yehoshanah/2004/open_source_community.htm
http://humanifesto.org/yehoshanah/2004/value_driven_business.htm

open source in an internet cafe business system include:

1. PC OS , openoffice.org etc, browsers etc
2. COOP reception/admin operational software
3. CMS for Online Knowledge & COOP procedure manual
4. CMS for local blogg, BB, websites & advertising network
5. Accounting for CURRENCY and SHARE value trading.

Perhaps GOOGLE will pull together open source for public access.
But are they going to satisfy all their investors with open source?

I seek a cooperative business model as an open source licience.

I see the need for a local shop that is available to connect locally.
Global access for the average person living in a specific local area.

well Nat, what do you think?
