Michelle Mahrer


Michelle Mahrer is an award winning filmmaker based in Melbourne who has made many award winning television documentaries. After graduating from the Australian Film and TV School in the 1980's, Mahrer moved to New York and lived there for 7 years developing a career as a well known music video director. She returned to live in Australia in 1993 and has since developed an international career directing award winning documentaries and films about dance and the arts. She is also a partner in production company Luna Pictures with producer Nicole Ma. Their collaborations include several documentaries which explore cross cultural themes. These include KURTAL SNAKE SPIRIT which follows the journey of Aboriginal elder Spider back to his traditional lands in the Great Sandy Desert and DANCES OF ECSTASY a celebrated documentary that explores how different cultures around the world connect with a spiritual dimension through rhythm, dance and music. Other films include "URBAN CLAN" about the Bangarra Dance Theatre, and The Black Swan about choreographer Meryl Tankard. All have been broadcast on the ABC.
